Stephen Nelson married his wife Kassi in 2012 in Saint George, Utah. They reside in Saint George with their daughter Reese who was born in 2014. He has been in Saint George since 1995, where he and his family moved from the Salt Lake area. Stephen and Kassi are expecting their second child, a son, in October, 2017.

Stephen and Kassi built their first home in 2016 and currently live in Desert Canyon by the Saint George airport. Stephen grew up in Saint George, Utah with his parents and 3 brothers. Growing up he loved sports. He played baseball, basketball, and football. He played basketball and baseball for Dixie High in Saint George, where he started for the varsity baseball team as a freshman and lettered every year. He was 3 time All-Region 9 and 1 Honorable Mention, and Region 9 MVP his senior year. He also won a state title as the leadoff hitter, ace starting pitcher, and second baseman. He was two-time All State, and Academic All-State.

In high school Stephen took second place in the state in the Stock Market Game, and this is when his passion for financial planning began. Stephen graduated top of his class at Dixie High with honors.

After high school Stephen got a scholarship to play baseball at Salt Lake Community College. There he was an Scenic West Athletic Conference Honorable Mention, and an Academic All-American. He played two years at SLCC, where he was also involved in an athlete program that taught elementary school children the importance of self esteem and to stay away from drugs. The organization was Know Greater Heroes. Between his two seasons at SLCC he spent two years in Novosibirsk (Siberia), Russia doing service for his church.

Following his time at  SLCC, Stephen transferred to Dixie State University to play baseball. While at Dixie State University he was the Director of Opportunity Quest Dixie State, which is a business plan competition for students. During his junior year of baseball he was an Academic All-American, and Academic All-Pac West, with the best athlete GPA at Dixie State. It was at Dixie State where Stephen came in contact with the Northwestern Mutual Internship.
